KANSAS CITY, KAN. (Nov. 25, 2013) –Charlene Sargent is an active, independent woman who lives on her
own in Senior Living of Bonner Springs. But when she fell a few weeks
ago during a trip to the Kansas City Zoo, she ended up in the Providence
Medical Center Emergency Services Department, then was admitted to the
hospital for sciatic nerve pain.
Though she felt better after a few days in the hospital for treatment,
doctors didn't think she was quite ready to go home yet. "I needed
a lot more physical therapy to rehabilitate the injury," the 72-year-old
woman says. "I couldn't go to my daughter's home because
she has stairs, and there was no way I could go up and down them."
Fortunately, she was an excellent candidate for Providence Place, a 69-bed
skilled nursing and rehabilitative care center located on the hospital's
campus at 8909 Parallel Parkway. Providence Place offers skilled and intermediate-level
care to meet patients' needs for short-term (less than 30 days) or
long-term stays.
Sargent has been able to continue her rehabilitation at Providence Place,
participating in sessions twice each day. "I can definitely tell
that I'm improving," she says. In fact, about two-thirds of the
patients at Providence Place are there for rehabilitation from falls,
stroke, fractures, surgery or extended hospital stays. The facility offers
physical, occupational and speech therapies, along with IV therapies,
tube feeding, specialized nutrition, diabetes care, pain management, wound
and post-operative care, new catheter and ostomy care, respiratory therapy
and sub-acute rehabilitation/nursing care.
Providence Place offers its patients a home-like atmosphere where the focus
is on the individual. "At Providence Place, we have embraced the
transformation in older adult services," says Mike Warren, Providence
Place administrator. "We respect our residents' choices. For
example, the strict medical regimen of the past is gone. Residents can
eat when they like, take part in the activities they enjoy and rest when
they want, just like at home. They can express their choices. This leads
to better outcomes and an improved quality of life for our residents."
Other Providence Place services include onsite dental care, podiatry care,
beauty/barber services, hospice care, geriatric-psychiatric evaluation,
laboratory, X-ray and cardiology services through the hospital, social
services, activities and spiritual care.
Sargent has found her stay at Providence Place a lifesaver. "This
was a really good option for me while I recovered from my fall,"
she says. "Mike is very caring. I feel very comfortable under his
guardianship. All of the staff members who work here have just been exceptional,"
she adds. "I would highly recommend Providence Place for anyone who
needs extended medical care. I just don't know what I would have done
without it."
Now with three weeks of physical therapy under her belt, Sargent is on
her way back to her Bonner Springs home. "I love to go to the movies,
shop and have continued to work part time," she says. "I hope
now that I am home again, I can return to my normal routine."
Providence Place is a part of Prime Healthcare Services. The skilled nursing
and rehabilitative care center has two wings dedicated to short-term patient
stays. Most of these patients are discharged to their homes, assisted
living or other long-term care facilities. There is also one wing dedicated
to caring for individuals who choose to make Providence Place their home.
Providence Place accepts Medicare and Medicaid for payment, as well as
private insurance plans. For more information about Providence Place,
